Treanor Organ Company History - 1950 to 2007
Mr. Treanor began studying the design and construction of organs at age 15 in 1950. In 1957, after seven years training with several well known organ builders and service companies, George Reed and Mr. Treanor founded Reed-Treanor Organ Company. Over the next ten years they built six new organs, rebuilt six other organs and had a clientele of sixty-five churches that they maintained on a regular basis.
In 1967 Mr. Treanor resigned from the company, leaving Mr. Reed to carry on with the business until his untimely death in 1988 from Cancer.
Mr. Treanor Moved to Los Angeles. There, he worked with Modern Music Company to set up, tune and maintain harpsichords and a portative organ that were rented to music groups and recording studios. He also designed three new six rank portative organs which were built by the Abbot & Seiker Company, who specialized in tracker action instruments.
In 1999, Mr. Treanor came to Korea. During this visit he attended some recitals and visited several churches. Mr. Treanor noticed that many of the organs were out of tune and some had serious mechanical problems. One of these was the YounDong church. The organ in YounDong was in poor condition and none of the "Orgelbaumeisters" in Korea could fix it.
In just 13 hours of work, Mr. Treanor did what no other person in Korea could do, repair the organ and tune it for the first time in 18 years. As a result, Mr. Treanor was contracted to build a new organ for the church. The largest Church Organ in Asia now stands in the YounDong Presbyterian church.
To build this organ, Mr. Treanor established the first fully equipped Organ Factory in Korea and trained eight Koreans in the art of organ building. In 2001 construction began on a magnificent instrument. Three years later these eight Korean Organ Builders completed the first organ built in Korea. This organ sets the standard for all pipe organs of today for size, quality and range of tone. There is no unification or transmission of any primary stop on any division. This monumental instrument is a historic achievement. Unique among all modern organs, ranking 58th among the largest organs in the world, it is the largest organ installed in any church in Asia.
The Treanor Organ Company has since restored and installed two other organs donated to Korean Churches from The United States, and now maintains five organs on a regular basis.
